An ETO (Electro‑Technical Officer) on a yacht is responsible for all electrical, electronic, and communication systems onboard.

They manage the yacht’s power distribution, navigation electronics, lighting, entertainment systems, and IT networks. The ETO ensures every system runs safely and efficiently, performs maintenance and troubleshooting, and supports the Chief Engineer with technical operations. In short, they keep the yacht’s technology — from radar to Wi‑Fi — functioning flawlessly throughout every voyage.

Duties of A ETO

  • Maintains and repairs all electrical and electronic systems, including power distribution, lighting, and control panels.
  • Oversees navigation and communication equipment, ensuring radar, GPS, and radio systems operate flawlessly.
  • Manages IT and entertainment networks, keeping onboard connectivity and audiovisual systems running smoothly.
  • Conducts safety checks and preventive maintenance, preventing electrical faults and ensuring compliance with maritime standards.
  • Supports the Chief Engineer, assisting with technical troubleshooting and system upgrades across the vessel.
